Long bio

David J.S. Madgett has spent nearly two decades representing everyday Minnesotans. As founder of Madgett Law, LLC in Minneapolis, he built a practice in consumer credit law, fraud litigation, and civil rights, representing real people against the institutions that take advantage of them. His firm has helped thousands of Minnesotans recover from identity theft, correct fraudulent records, and rebuild their financial lives.

Before civilian practice, Madgett served as a Captain in the United States Air Force JAG Corps, where he was a base Chief of Justice. He prosecuted criminal cases and advised commanders. He is a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law.

In 2026, Madgett ran a first-time grassroots campaign for Minnesota Attorney General as an independent-minded Democrat. Without party-machine support, he earned 103,743 votes (15.33%) in the August 11 DFL primary and carried the endorsement of Arne Carlson, Minnesota's 37th Governor. He supports Keith Ellison in the November 2026 general election and is organizing toward the 2030 race.

His website publishes a sourced research series, Minnesota by the Numbers, objective voter guides, and position pieces. He is the author of The Rigged Court, on forced arbitration. He lives in Orono, Minnesota.

Positions, in his words

Position pieces carry the label Where Dave Stands and are indexed on the blog. Each states the position, the strongest objection, and one inconvenient fact conceded. Research articles in Minnesota by the Numbers are not positions; they follow a sourced-or-omitted rule and list what could not be verified.
